Your case study project is a group project and will be due in week 12 of the course. You will present your case study project to the class at that time so plan ahead! The purpose of the case study project is to apply what you have learned in the course about tourism policy and planning. You will work in your team to divide up the work and complete the information required for the case study project.
First, you must identify a destination. You can can pick a country, a city, a province, a state, a region or a city. The ONE MAIN requirement is that your destination must have a tourism plan associated with it.
Second, your first page of the case study project must be organised into three main categories: the name of the destination, a promotional video of the destination, and the basic tourism statistics about the destination. The statistics may include: a google map of the destination, the population of the destination, the size/area of the destination, the tourism visitation statistics for the last two years, the major economic industries at the destination, the major languages spoken, and the main cultural groups that live in the destination.
Third, your second page will provide a summary of two important aspects of the destination’s policies and planning: the first part of the page will summarize the tourism plan for the region. What organisation(s) have worked on or published the plan? Is it a government agency? Identify the tourism stakeholders. What are the main policies/strategies/elements that are part of the plan? Please identify them and briefly summarize them. The second part of the page is the COVID-19 strategy. For this section you need to research to understand how the destination is addressing the impacts of the pandemic. This is a critical part of the tourism plan and the destination’s recovery.
Fourth, your third page will identify 5 positive impacts and 5 negative impacts from the tourism industry. Please provide a short summary of the impacts and use an image as part of your explanations. References are required for this section.
Finally, your four page will summarize 5 best practices at the destination that illustrate how the destination is supporting the UNWTO’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
